Ngara and Karonga

Karonga is the capital of Karonga district and is 70 kilometers (1 hour-drive) away from the lodge. Ngara is located between Chilumba and Karonga. Discover a superb summary from Prehistory to the present day of the Karonga region and Malawi at Karonga Cultural and Museum Center (the visit is included in the price). You'll find the dinosaur discovered in the region, the Malawisaurus, but also human remains aged of 2.5 million years, found less than 20 kilometers from the museum. The whole museum is written in English but there are a lot of pictures and some interactive activities. The city market is also very interesting, with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.There is a huge maze if clothing, shoes and fabrics called "chitenje" (the fabric women wear around their legs). You can also find street vendors selling fruit (pineapples, bananas, ...) or pastries tasting like donuts. The beaches of Karonga are magnificient. They are beautiful sandy beaches that stretch as far as the eye can see. Ideal for spending a quiet day in the shade of the parasols that line the lake. For lunch, there are a lot of little restaurants in the city, offering local cuisine at low prices (for example, fish with rice and beans). If you plan to stay more than one day in Karonga, do not hesitate to consult "Karonga Tourism Association" to find out about lodges in the city.
