The local "beer" process
Service Description
You follow every step to make the local beer and where they make it. It is explained by the women of the Hamunyepo village, not far from the lodge. At the end, they offer you a small glass to taste it, but be careful, this beer is very strong! Activity program : You leave the lodge around 2pm to Hamunyepo village. You arrive at 3pm and are welcomed by the community. The activity begins with a presentation of the place where they make the local beer. Then they show how to make it and explain every step. At the end, you can taste it! The activity is not available for children under 12 and the tasting is not available under 18. Steps of the beer process : Step 1 : mix sugar, water and the crushed outside-part of corn (called gaga). Step 2 : let the mix for 4 days, untill maturation. Step 3 : put te mixture into a terracotta pot. Step 4 : close the pot with more terracotta and place on a wood fire. Step 5 : the vapor of the mixture goes in a pipe, that leads to another pot. The vapor cools down on the pipe, to transform into a liquid, and falls into the pot. Step 6 : Strain the liquid and put it in a container. Step 7 : taste the local beer ! About the women of the Hamunyepo village : The women of this village decided to create "Home bank", an association created in 1999. The main aim is to support financially the village, orphans and children. Every Monday, they gather to dance, to discuss the problems of daily life and to play Bao, a local game. They have a 100 kwatcha fee to belong to the community group. Every week, one woman of the group cooks for Chilumba community hospital.
